Toronto Subway Party 2003 Zed TV CBC imagitator - 808 views - 1 year ago
How many times have you ridden a crowded subway car in rush hour in total silence, avoiding eye contact with the strangers you see each day?

How many time have you wished there was someone, something, anything! to breathe some life into the ride?

Well, if you're lucky, one day you might encounter an infamous Toronto SUBWAY PARTY... and meet some friendly folks who want to recessitate your long, dull trek to work...

The goal of these parties is not to "party" in front of passengers but to connect with them. We meet during rush hour in the morning to help make people's day better and to melt the barriers that separate us on our daily commute.

Note: We discovered that it was one of the passenger's birthdays and sang her happy birthday.

Shot by Catherine Hew, Paige Gratland, Noelle Elia.
Interviewee & Organizer: Carly Stasko

A subway party is a celebration that occurs on a mass transit system. Generally, people meet at a predetermined station in their city's mass transit system, wait until their numbers have achieved critical mass, and board the train.
This party was organized by the Toronto Media Collective.
However, Newmindspace have been throwing great parties in recent years and even have some resources about organizing your own so check check check them out at

Surprise Marching Band for Trevor's Dissertation Party 20088 imagitator - 910 views - 1 year ago
APRIL 3rd - Trevor defended his dissertation "Consuming, Schooling and the End of Politics" and earned his Doctorate in Philosophy at OISE/UofT.

APRIL 4th - Trevor had a party to celebrate.

In the invitations to the party Trevor said

"A marching band will perform, followed by a roundtable of scholarly papers on the epistemological and metaphysical presuppositions that inform facebook. Some of my top Business Ethics students will perform ethical acts while blindfolded."

Trevor was joking about this, but sometimes when you put an idea out into the universe it has a funny way of coming back and finding you!

THE PLOT THICKENS......

The night of the party, little did Trevor know that a Marching Band had been formed to celebrate the occasion!
After marching into the bar, singing "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow" and dressing Trevor up as the leader of the band, we proceeded to parade around the neighborhood and through the school lobby much to the curiosity and amazement of random onlookers.

Trevor was very surprised when we arrived at the party and he was a great sport and seized his chance to lead a parade and celebrate.

It was a lot of fun with a lot of organizing and help from friends and family.

Thanks everyone, enjoy and celebrate life.

love, light and laughter
Carly
