Ike is a prolific Filmmaker, Visual Artist, Writer, Philosopher, and environmental activist. He did the first acid rain film in North America and received seed funding from the NFB Canada for that effort. He is the recipient of numerous arts awards, His work is in the Canadian Museum of photography and numerous books of the NFB Stills Division, also libraries and collections of world figures. His book in black and white, about the Azores, sits in the library of former President Bill Clinton, and the Portuguese President and Prime Minister of Portugal, Dr. Mario Soares and Dr. Anabel Cavaco Silva. The "Canada Book" is in the Library of Queen Elizabeth. He was nominated by the United Nations Law of the Sea Division for the prestigious Pew Fellowship Foundation award in Marine Conservation. The NFB offered a book with his images about fisheries, given to the delegates of the UN, Law of the Sea Conference in Caracas Venezuela. He has worked with four Divisions of UNESCO, Paris and exhibited at the 2nd World Water Forum at the Hague in 2000. He has produced two award winning books one in black & white for the Portuguese Government and one in color titled Mother Earth/Father Sky sponsored in part by UNESCO and the Portuguese Water Authority, EPAL.
His work is largely directed toward social and conservation issues, his book "Mother Earth/ Father Sky and his film Artist's Water and the Seven Seas, 2000, predated Al Gore's film "Inconvenient Truth" with a call for an end to greenhouse gas emissions and the economic consumer ideology of the West. He has worked with both the Federal and Provincial Ministry of the Environment Canada. One of his films titled "Lake Odyssey" was produced for the MOE, Ontario in 35mm and was released as a short feature and played in theaters throughout Canada.
Ike Karnick's work continues with his present project "World On Edge" a six part segmented, one hour productions. The documentary is about the interface of climate change, global economics and social issues. In his works he offers the polemic of the necessity for a radical change of direction away from a consumer society ethic to one that embraces conserver values. This philosophical and practical approach is based in human survival.
