I also not recommend to connect to WEP networks. Suddenly Windows do not inform you about network characteristics before you trying to connect to it, so i'm using Maxidix Wifi Suite for that.

Try specialized tools to improve signal quality without all this stuff :). It brings full characteristics about surrounding networks and signal, so you adjust your router, or network card parameters. In my case the most significant thing was actually used channel, Windows not provides this info....
