A slightly early Happy New Year's present from me to my subscribers.
I'll be on a cruise on the first week of 2011 with Jonathan Coulton, Paul & Storm, Wil Wheaton and more, so I thought it would be appropriate to have my last video for 2010 be from JoCo.

What is NOT typical for this video is that I've layered a second vocal track on the left side audio of me singing an improvised harmony part. I generally follow the existing harmonies where available - at least, any that I could pick out by ear - but I've also added some personal flourishes.
If you're looking for assistance on scoring for the song, MUTE your left speaker. The right side audio is me singing what the game is looking for on lead vocals.

Welcome to the Black Parade is an exhausting and somewhat difficult song to sing. There are a LOT of lyrics, and very few places to breathe, and there are harmony vocals layered all over the place.
The tricky parts of the song are the harmony part charted on the phrase "disappointed faces of your peers" and the rapid-fire lyrics in the outtro ("do or die, you'll never break me..."). The harmony phrase is a bit hard to hear, and It is easy to break combo in the outtro because the words are short and require a lot of accuracy to hit.
Aside from that, there's just a lot of singing in this song with few places to rest. Remember to take as many deep breaths in between phrases as you can manage and try to conserve your energy because you're covering a LOT of vocal parts. You can hear me getting tired toward the end of this video, and it really impacts my pitch accuracy until I can grab a solid breath or two near the end of the song.

This is a montage of some video I took at the World of Warcraft midnight launch on Dec. 6, 2010 at the GameStop in Clearwater, Florida.
The first few minutes is tripod-cam footage of myself and other people playing Rock Band 3, and the rest of the time is devoted for some really stunning performances by daredevil acrobat troupe Acrobellum.
Special thanks to GameStop, Red Bull, and Acrobellum and the crowd for permission to post the video.
Also thanks to Aaron's Rentals for the use of the large projection TV that I ran my Rock Band 3 setup on.
Sorry about the flaky Rock Band 3 audio - my camera was way too close to the speakers when recording and its audio pickup is just too sensitive. The next time I do something like this I'll bring my condenser mic and laptop to capture better audio.

I wanted to see just how well the new engine handles vocal output from the player, so I turned up my sensitivity on my PS3 and mic volume in-game to maximum... and the results (as you will see and hear) leave a lot to be desired.
I sing the entire song in its original pitches; you can barely even hear me when I go low for some reason. Ditto for talkies. There's also a short burst of some weird static that shows up about halfway into the video. To even get this much volume on my vocals I had to use two microphones simultaneously.
Overall, I'm dissatisfied by the player's vocal quality in Rock Band 3. In the future I'll be doing my usual of recording external audio and mixing it back into the game audio myself.
As for technical difficulty, this song is arguably the most difficult song to perform in Rock Band vocals, period. It's REALLY tough, and definitely deserves its devil-tiered vocals rating because there's weird melodies and harmonies everywhere, and you're covering for several different singers - often one right after another.
I may come back and annotate this video with tips to help people get past this song, as there are so many strange melodies that you can't hear very well but are asked to sing.

Plush is a mostly straight forward song with some very low notes that may be troublesome for some singers. For myself, as a natural bass range singer, I have a lot more problems with the high notes than the low ones, but your mileage may vary.
There's a few odd melodies in the verses where the lines just sort warble onto some very unintuitive notes if you're not very familiar with the song, so watch out for the end of some of the phrases where the line wanders a bit.
Other than that, this is probably somewhere in the middle of the pack in terms of solo vocal difficulty amongst all of the Rock Band 3 on-disc songs.
Aside: I'm a little annoyed with the microphone sensitivity (or lack thereof) in RB3. The arrow flickers like mad sometimes, and I ended up having to re-record the captured video feed because the original run I recorded the external audio on just had the arrow jumping every which way, despite being properly scored.
