Tyrone Biggums by Jack Brown
They called him yam teef; teeth the color of yams, eyes the color of piss.
Skin like walrus meat, rough, sand paper palms.
He pulled petals from the earth, hoping to sprout orchids from his wings.
Scraping holes in the wind with sticks of sugarcane,
he climbs into the mouth of a cloud and drifts away.
Blowing lavender castles of smoke from purpled lungs,
erupting salt mines from his pores, he creates oceans of old folks' tears.
An empty shell for a body, a bombed out church for a soul.
His tar colored dotted eyes, squint across the sea.
He sees himself crowned with a halo of bourbon, baptized by stale rain
he was worshiped as a devil, lynched in the forest hung by chains.
They pulled his brass bones from his limbs, made trombones that caught ears ablaze.
Wooden lips splintered melodies of nightmares
jumbled pieces of blood and violence, jazz, and broken dreams.
His ashes were pulled from the earth like tobacco, his ancestry smoked away.
Blue midnight, water escapes the day Thelonious on piano,
yam teef cries out the rain.

original song: Suave the ape - Time passed autumn. beat: Apollo Brown. painting by John Brown. lyrics: this for those at the bottom. the misrepresented. misunderstood. this is for you. this is for me.
i'm takin' my voice back, usin it as a weapon. sick of bein silent, sick of sayin nuttin'. sick of the racist crackas in the white house, still livin it up like its 1845 in the south. they don't even got to do the lynchin. brothas killin each other. dyin by the system. now listen. how you supposed to find yourself a new position? too many cops on the block or none. i think they wanna us to die just for fun. watch the news. watch the tv. who is the enemy? huh makes you think? now i gots to go to the bar, get a drink. put my money down before i can get ink from my pen and say what i'm feelin.
welfare. warfare. welfare. warfare.
still homeless. still palestinian. still violent. still singin'.
now i'm from the d shit ain't pretty. gun shot blaze thru the throat of my city. can't breathe. so i can't sleep. i'm an insomniac. heart on my sleeve. i write the same lines, so you can get em stuck in ya head. i'm alive but i feel like the walkin dead.

At the bottom of my lungs, tried to breathe Found myself facing death realized it was lack of sleep Insomnia, yeah I know the king. Conflict! Mecca! Ibrahim! The holy trinity, a monsoon of a dream. I run through water, my spirit's a stream. Exhale, the smoke castles resume in the sky. I never inhale, I get high off my own mind. I write lyrical montages not rhymes. Still caught in the paradigms can't lie in my shell again can't compete my heart's desperately dangling from my sleeve But I've spoken to the grandfather's of men hung from trees They speak of the sun as it spoke to me. The light's in the distance I see the color of god's eyes gleam. And I'm not sure what I believe But I know for sure my soul is the nappy head of truth not a weave.
