Forty medical students began their journey into the medical profession when they were formally enrolled at the International American University College of Medicine ( IAUCOM) at it's 19th White Coat ceremony, which was held at the Kimatrai hotel in Vieux-FORT last Friday. Claded in their white coats and stethoscope, the students recited the Hippocratic Oath which spelt out what is expected of them as Physicians in training. It reads in part:" I approach all aspect of my education with honesty and dignity. Embrace all opportunities to learn from patients, teachers and colleagues. I will always maintain the highest standard of professional conduct..." The momentous occasion was graced with the presence of newly appointed government Senator, Debbie Tobierre, a businesswoman from Vieux-Fort. Dr. Mark Slivkoff, in his welcome remarks said the school's influence is growing, not only in America, but beyond its shores. ' It's awesome to see that...It's extraordinary, " Dr. Slivkoff said. He told the students that they have made the right choice by deciding to pursue their dreams of becoming a medical doctor at IAU, and advised them to stay focus and avoid distractions. Dr. Slivkoff emphasised that their journey ahead requires a lot of sacrifices on their part in order for them to succeed. Senator Tobierre in her remarks impressed upon the students the need to take their work very seriously and stay focus. She called upon them to perform their task with dignity and pride, adding that it will bring long term benefits. Tobiere also emphasised the need for the students to show compassion towards others noting that it will go a long way in making their career a success. The Senator applauded the students for giving their life in service to others and wish them success in their pursuit. "I encourage you to keep steadfast in spite of the difficulties you may encounter during your journey. Keep your eyes on the pride and passion for what you have set out to achieve and always look foward to your anticipated results,' Senator Tobierre said. Dr. Raghavendra Pillapa described the students as exceptional, adding that they face an extraordinary journey. He said that with dedication they will achieve their goals of becoming successful physicians. Dr. Pillapa warned the students that they should not seek short-cuts in their journey of becoming medical doctors, emphasising the need for them to work hard and never give up.
