I've attempted to make as much of a living as possible by dancing (performing, teaching, agent-ing) for over 15 years and have been belly dancing for almost 20 years.
I love this music and dance and am honored to be able to share it.
Sure glad I got that microbiology degree & did all that post bac research at the University of Florida, it's served me well in my current career!
I live in Gainesville, Florida (=FL), USA. Prior to 2008, most of my regularly scheduled dancing (at restaurants, hookah lounges) was in Jacksonville, FL. Gainesville had no regular venue for bd that lasted any significant amount of time. Though the recent popularity of hookah lounges here looked promising for dancing, and indeed I was performing at a couple, what seems to be the usual G'ville malaise has, for the moment, snuffed that out again.
Recent regular gigs include Hookah Nite Cafe (Gainesville, FL), Kulture Hookah Lounge (St. Augustine, FL), the Casbah Cafe (for 10 years), Sahara Cafe, and Palm Garden restaurant (prior to its current incarnation) (all Jacksonville, FL).
Back in the day: Farah's Gazebo, Jacksonville (now closed), Farah's in Gainesville, FL; Casa Marina, Jacksonville Beach.
Even further back in the day, I drove every weekend to Portt Charlotte and/or Ft Meyers (4 hrs 1 way) to dance at Greek restaurants (Greektown, Plaka on the Beach, Nomiki's Plaka)- because there was nothing w/belly dancing ANYWHERE in Florida (excepting Miami area, I simply don't know about there) other than Zorba's in Tarpon Springs; possibly 1 or 2 other places in Tampa, Orlando. ZILCH north of that.
About my heritage:
I am Slovak by blood. My great-grandparents emigrated to Chicago. Traditions of my family's culture were lost between the second and third generation. The children were encouraged to "blend in" and parents used the Slovak language as a code to speak without their children understanding, instead of passing it along.
My first exposure to Arabic music, over 20 years ago, seemed to burn a path straight to my soul, as did belly dancing when I first saw it. It seemed like they had already been there, a part of me. The music & language, and obviously raks sharqi, speak to my heart. Nothing can compare to the richness of the maqams & rhythms of the music, the expressiveness and subtleties of the language...and some of the most beautiful women and men on the planet. Not to mention the best food, great friends... and I'm always late. Who has time to rush?
This is speaking incredibly broadly, of course. "Arab" covers a lot of territory. But this is my life!
