I'm not sure why you chose to respond here, but that's okay. Anyone who knows music has to appreciate what The Beatles did, and the music they created. That being said, a cover doesn't necessarily mean copying the original in every single way. Elliott Smith made the song his own, and that's what's supposed to be done when one covers someone else's music. The Beatles are my favourite band, but Elliott Smith is probably my favourite artist/songwriter. They're different in a lot of ways, but Elliott Smith's voice isn't weak, not in my opinion. He basically destroyed it by screaming loads in his band prior to most of his most famous work. I'm glad to hear your opinion though.
Also, just because it makes me want to explode when people spell his name with one 't', I'm going to point it out; it's Elliott.
