Born in South Wales in 1987, Huw began his musical education on the trumpet aged seven, presenting his first recital four years later. At the age of fourteen he won a scholarship to study with John Dickinson and Murray Greig at Chethams School of Music, where he won all the major prizes. Huw is currently continuing his studies at the Royal Academy of Music with Professor James Watson, Mark David, Howard Snell and Robert Farley. A regular prize-winner, Huws accolades include third place in the Texaco Young Musician of Wales (2003), Brass Winner and Concerto Finalist in the BBC Young Musician of the Year (2006), the Young Artist Award from the Melos Brass Academy (2008) and a Hattori Foundation scholarship. Huw was the youngest ever winner of the International Trumpet Guild Solo Competition in 2005, completing a rare double by becoming the youngest winner of the ITG Orchestral Competition in 2008. Most recently, he was awarded 4th place and a Special Jury Prize in the Ellsworth Smith International Trumpet Solo Competition (Boston 2008).
In frequent demand as a soloist, Huw has given concerto performances with the Northern Sinfonia, Hamburg Camerata, Banff Festival Orchestra and Irish Chamber Orchestra, under conductors including Yan Pascal Tortelier and Thomas Zehetmair. He has appeared throughout Europe, Asia and North America, at festivals in Cheltenham, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and Trømso, in recital at the Wigmore Hall and St. Georges Bristol, and broadcast on both national radio and television. Huw has also commissioned and premièred works by Eric Ewazen, Hugh Brunt and Luke Burke, most recently giving the world première as soloist in Leif Segerstams Symphony No. 173, conducted by the composer.
A committed orchestral musician, Huw has worked with the LSO, Philharmonia, Hallé and BBC Philharmonic. For three years he held the principal trumpet chair in the National Youth Orchestra, in 2005 was appointed the youngest ever trumpeter in the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester, and in 2007 performed as co-principal in the Pacific Music Festival Orchestra (Japan). He currently holds the position of Acting Associate Principal Trumpet with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, Finland.
Chamber music activities include contemporary group Radius, and as a founder member of both QuintEssence and The Brass Collective; in this medium he has toured Romania, performed at the Royal Festival Hall, and given concerts for HRH Prince of Wales. One of the youngest members in the inaugural LSO Brass Academy, Huw has also worked with some of the worlds finest players, including Håkan Hardenberger, Jens Lindemann, Reinhold Friedrich and Eric Aubier.
