australophithecus seemed like a pretty weak primate, but they were smart enough to perhaps throw rocks or hit with a rock. You might want to google your ansewer, but keep in mind that australophithecus had better adapted teeth to bite too. They were kind of short too. In one on one fight i think a chimp would be more agressive and physically strong and the australopithecus would simply rely on its cleverness. Idk it is hard to say haha.
