I JUST heard Kaufmann live at the Met singing Cavaradossi in Tosca. It was flat out beautiful. These recordings are deceptive. In the big houses there is nothing Wagnerian about the voice. It does not have the size or bite to cut through a Wagnerian orchestra. There is a warmth and velvety text...

He's got a dramatic color but I heard that live his voice was volume wise full lyric.

And If you listen to his Turandot on youtube it's evident. However if I were to make a choice between dramatic and helden. I'm choosing dramatic...

No it's a tenor voice using baritone technique.

His passaggio is much higher then a baritone. Evident on the string of G's at 2:35.

Very few tenors use this technique, Giuseppe Giacomini uses this technique.

If you think Kaufmann sounds like a baritone, Giacomini will blow you away too.

I hear it now. its like a constant hidden "L" consonant in every vowel he sings. a hint of it in EVERY vowel. Strange. I usually see this from Korean male singers. What's his excuse?

Ok, who is this cast? The Leporello just sang a high A on an "ee" vowel. Not to mention his awkward body position while singing it. And sang it effortlessly at 6:10. Wow didn't see that coming. And Giorgio is awesome.
