A double-crested cormorant was brought into SFWC with a severe fish hook injury. Our veterinary staff preformed abdominal surgery and removed seven fish hooks, a metal sinker and a large amount of monofilament fishing line. After a few weeks of recovery, we were able to release the bird back out into the wild. If you are fishing and a bird grabs your baited hook, please do not just cut the line. Gently reel in the bird and call the proper authorities to assist in removal. Fish hook injuries are often fatal but easily preventable. So remember, don’t cut the line!
