To answer your other questions:
As long as you tear out 30 percent of the pages from all over the book and not in one huge chunk, the book should not fall apart. Tear one or two pages in groups together, that way the spine structure will not weaken.
You can tape the pages on the edge that is parallel to the spine. Run some tape up the long side of the page, grab a few extra pages to go next to it for strength, and fold the tape over your little stack. Now you should have a chunk that is sturdy enough to draw and paint on! Hope that helps! More videos to come... :)
