But I have found that some PHRASING cannot be acheived unless you are in an open tuning. I also use an open "G"
tuning a lot for more country blues. it is G-B-D-G-B-D low to high. Great for Dobro stuff.
Ry Cooder is also one of the greatest slide men of all time
and he uses many different tuning. I am sure you know of his work already.

I'll have to check out "Skydog". There is another good book by Scott Fraser called "Midnight Rider" which is a bio of the band starting from Duane & Greg's childhood days to the 90s (or whenever he wrote the book) and doesn't say specifically but hints that Duane played SB in standard tuning. I guess history depends on who you listen to - hahaha - It does say that SB was the 1st song he learned to play slide on after seeing Taj Mahal at a club in LA. And that he played everything in standard until he met John Hammond who showed him some open tunings.
But another reason I like to play in standard tuning is so I can play Dickey's leads too; that would be tricky in open tuning.
