I am an anarchist (or left-libertarian socialist). I am also:

anti-authoritarian, anti-state, anti-imperialist, anti-war, anti-religion, anti-jingoism, anti-corporate mainstream media, anti-chauvanism, anti-militarism, anti-nationalism, anti-patriotism, anti-sexism, anti-xenophobia, anti-homophobia, anti- anti-conservative, anti-liberal, anti-Democrat, anti-Republican, anti-Obama, anti-Bush, anti-Clinton, anti-Carter, anti-Nixon, anti-Kennedy.

And yet the Truther set seems to think that this would make me a natural ally. I am not, because I am not so fanatical (nor ignorant, nor unaware of my natural ignorance concerning some matters) that I feel I must accept the most extreme understanding of affairs proffered by the conspiracy zealots, which in my opinion are merely modern day apocalyptic cults. They, as practitioners of eschatology, claim to possess "secret" or "hidden" knowledge concern the end of days.

I believe that their convoluted fables miss the brutal simplicity of events, and that the Manichean crudeness of their analysis fails to realize the complex self-deception of the elite war-makers.

I implore all concerned activists to apply this model to what one is subjected to from the frothing mouths of these insipid clowns.

9/11 Truth is nothing more than an eschatological, apocalyptic cult - a convenient panacea for the ignorant and chronically intellectually incurious. Or so it it should have remained.

Hopelessness and despair can be liberating and even comforting. No one can be blamed for finding the idea of a monolithic and arbitrarily evil entity appealing. Certainly not in a socially atomized consumer culture infused with every matter of informational minutiae. We "know a lot of things", but rarely know what is true (or even if truth can be known). We do know that we feel powerless and we do know that we feel that we are being deceived and that, despite the rhetorical declarations of "democracy", that we are rather impotent when it comes to the machinations of great power and the interests of the elite.

The main propellants fueling the 9/11 Truth Movement is widespread political desperation and social alienation, combined with an increasingly bleak socio-economic reality due to neoliberal policies. With so many feeling isolated, disenfranchised, unloved, unemployed and ignored, Western fundamentalism grows more radical with every year and it seems that greater numbers of people are succumbing to the weight of impotence, antipathy and ignorance, and flocking to the new religions springing up around conspiracy theory and anti-politics.

Technologically-savvy, intellectually-naive youth were particularly inclined to embrace the
morbid escapist cult of 9/11 Truth during the Bush II era because any opposition to his administration was interpreted as leftist and anti-authoritarian in character. This blinding hatred of Bush obscured the paranoid, far-right New World Order-fearing roots of the movement that entangled so many potential activists, greatly impeding any sort of meaningful anti-war or anti-imperialist campaign.

9/11 Truth is nihilistic entertainment; anti-politics that reward passivity, inaction, ignorance and intellectual vacuousness. Unfortunately, these characteristics make for easy transmission, and while many adherents believe initially that they are fighting the good fight or speaking truth to power, they should be encouraged by friends and family to divorce themselves from its nullifying, dystopian and misanthropic world view.

Practice intellectual self-defense.
