Malalakpuy Munyarryun is a young man in his late 30s who has been handed the role of ritual specialist, what Yolngu call a dalkarramirri. Such a responsibility is usually reserved for elders who have been through many many ceremonies and who have extensive social and ritual networks with other clan groups throughout the broader region. To be accorded a standing as prestigious as this suggests Malalakpuy has demonstrated the trust, discipline, knowledge and character that such a role demands.
Malalakpuy played a big role at the Ski Beach funeral of his brother Gary Dhurrkay 2 years ago. It was then that I got to know the Munyarryun brothers better, who had arrived from Dhalinybuy outstation in mass. Malalakpuy stayed on at Ski Beach after the funeral and lived there for a period of time, and returned to Ski Beach again this year for his brother's 2nd anniversary Memorial Ceremony which you can view in another of my video clips:

I acquired this yidaki at the time of the 2nd Memorial Ceremony at Ski Beach. The yidaki is played here by Malalakpuy's brother-in-law who needs no introduction here. Larry Winiwini shows why he is still one of the most innovative and unique yidaki players in the Gove Peninsula region. His style is all his own, his syncopations and sense of rhythm utterly captivating.
This yidaki is a monster, a big hefty powerful beast with a distinctive conical shape. With a bell size up to 12 cm in diameter, it is one of the larger instruments we have in stock at the moment.
There is an appealing Wangurri design painted on the mouthpiece end, whilst the rest of the instrument has been left plain, with a sealer applied on the outside to protect the yidaki.
The voice is best described as warm, full-sounding and rich. Though the fundamental key registers in F, there is substantial bass response to this stick giving the impression of a lower key. The back pressure is outstanding, not squealingly high and overly compressed, but very comfortable and easy on the lungs. Because of the sensitivity of this yidaki, it does not take much to bring it to life and it responds to the slightest breath.
Acoustic elasticity, an important criteria in defining a great instrument, is superb... tongued accents bend the note downwards, producing lovely soft drum-like 'beats'. The overtone note is likewise outstanding: smooth, muted and very easy to reach. It can be fired at rapid succession which makes for enjoyable compositions and syncopations.
The bore is incredibly complex with numerous convolutions and channels - natural throughout except for some minor scrappings at the end.
This is a great yidaki, excelling in all areas and aesthetically pleasing to look at too. For Christmas only, we're offering this incredible yidaki in the iDIDJ Store at an unbeatable price. Check out the details:

Here's the Baywara powerhouse, the one and only Larry Gurruwiwi, King of Yirdaki!
For the 1st time in 3D HD, watch, listen and transport yourself to beside Larry as he gives the yirdaki a blast.
You can make your own 3D glasses cheaply, use Google. Or you can also watch in 2D by toggling the 3D options button.
The stick was one given to me by Honeyboy at Gapuwiyak on the return trip, I think it was made by Michael Wunungmurra but need to check.
Enjoy!
