I am amazed by the arguments and claims of "true believers" as they lend more strength to a scientific view of the world, a physicalist view of the world, in that the weakness of their views adds more strength than direct proof from the scientists themselves.

Life is very often like this: You get the opposite of what you seek. What you believe most vehemently often turns out to be the last bastion of wishful thinking, and its defeat ushers in a new view: the complete awakening to the hubris and vain folly that is the human condition.
The joke is always on us.
Enjoy the ride, but you've known how it was going to end for a long time.
