George at the Edinburgh Jazz Festival in 2006. Though frail and far from his former robust self, he was, as ever, completly charming and approachable. After signing a book, including a personal inscription, he wandered off for a whiskey (Irish). During the show he demanded whiskey and cigarettes. "I understand there is a complete ban on smoking in public places in Scotland" said George. "Ridiculous! At my age I'll do as I f****** well please!" With that, he lit up a Marlboro light to great applause from most of the audience, myself included. Good old Goodtime George. There will never be another like him.
