About MIKE HOLT

I've been making short films for quite a number of years now and you'll find a selection published here. From the fundraising Hot Heels Spin Bike Marathons to Charity Wig Parties, from my year spent in Zambia & South Africa, where I was fortunate to share many happy months with my mother before she passed away.

More recently I've been fortunate to spend a month in Western Australia with my brother Geoff and his family, where I found considerable inspiration (as I hope the movies illustrate) and onto Sydney for New Year with my dear friend Rene.

So now back in London, the most recent postings are from the Fitness First annual Momentum conference, where you'll find 1,000 Fitness Firsters revelling in the superb entertainment of platinum-selling singing superstar, Rhydian Roberts.

My film-making experience began with my first digital camera with a 30 second video function and Windows Movie Maker. After putting together a number of short promo films for my work, I was fortunate enough to be rewarded with a semi-pro Canon MVX-3i.

In 2003, I acquired a new Mac PowerBook and used iMovie for a year or so before out-growing this and buying Final Cut Express in time to edit a 90 minute travelogue set in Ibiza (this was not for publication, rather was a memento between a dozen friends who had shared a villa together).

The next quantum leap occurred when I took a sabbatical from my work at Fitness First and attended a Total Immersion in Documentary Film Course, run by the Documentary Film Makers Group (London).

This intensive 2-week course, held in a grand mansion in Kotla, Poland provided me with enormous insight into both directing and editing, which in turn is the best way to learn about shooting.

Equipped with these skills, I joined my partner and travelled to Zambia and South Africa, where I acquired a Sony HVR-V1E a newly released HDV camera, as compact and easily portable as the infamous PD-150 favoured by documentarians the world over.

My time in Africa divides in two, with approximately 7 months spent with my mother and her partner in Cape Town. Sadly, Mum's breast cancer had returned and despite a brave and valiant fight against it, this was to be the time for her to find resting peace.

I was blessed and will be forever grateful for the opportunity to reconnect with my mother, to help arrange her wedding to her partner, to spend many happy days together, to be reunited in body, mind and spirit and to help her find her path to lasting peace and divine grace.

It wasn't all about Cape Town however, as my partner was working as a volunteer at Zambia's largest mission hospital, St Francis in Katete, near the Malawian border. I made 5 trips to Zambia, the most memorable of which was an overland trip in a 4WD which my partner bought and later donated to St Francis Hospital's Sandy Logie HIV Clinic.

The experience in Zambia had a profound effect, I'd arranged some modest fundraising for an NGO called NZP+, The Network Of Zambian People Living With HIV/AIDS (see HOT HEELS films) through Fitness First and managed to provide a motorbike for outreach work in the rural areas around Katete as well as mattresses and blankets for NZP+ office and football and netball kits for 50 volunteers to enable improved sports and recreation events.

Upon our return to the UK, we were amazed and enormously grateful to be able to united the community of Katete with the Wig Party, with the assistance of UK HIV Charity, Crusaid. Now all proceeds from Wig Party are going to provide 'Points of Light' (see www.wigparty.org for more info) for this community.
