Come work with us at http://hitrecord.org Hit the big red button and join. Then contribute your work and remix others in this collaboration here! http://hitrecord.org/records/640452 Calling all Animators, all Illustrators, we are working with The Gregory Brothers on a second episode of the HITRECORD classic, They Can't Turn The Lights Off Now! And it's on the books to be screened at Sundance next week!
Episode One rallied behind Gay Civil rights, Episode 2 discusses the civil liberty to record Police and Law Enforcement officers throughout the country. Certain states in the USA have actually taken steps to outlaw anyone from photographing and video taping their local law enforcement, a direct slap in face to the First Amendment.
That's why The Gregory Brothers remixed the "Lights Off" music and wrote a new story with new lyrics and characters that addresses this concern. What they have made is fucking awesome!
And now it's our turn to start designing and animating the short film.
Here's what to do:
ILLUSTRATORS -
Design the 3 main characters:
The Kid with the Camera The Policeman An Angelic Benjamin Franklin who comes to educate us all Design Background Settings:
Listen to the song that The Gregory Brothers have contributed and read the script to learn the settings and environments. Watch Episode One and School House Rock to get a sense of the style we are looking for. Also, it'd be great if you can contribute your character designs along with the limbs, head, and torso seperated, so that animators can have total control and ease while animating.
Animators - Once we get some good Character and Setting designs, start animating! But please do it as simply as you can. The idea is to get this done in 7 days to be screened at Sundance!
Okay, get to work!
Thanks Again
J

You might know our record "and a new earth", it is definitely one of the most impactful short films to have come out of HITRECORD and we play it at all of our shows. I was thinking that Sundance 2012 is a great reason for us to make another version of it!
I absolutely love the original, it's a beautiful piece both in style and in substance. wirrow wrote the text and set it to a timelapse from the site while adding an instrumental track that he had made. The simplicity of it is what makes it so impactful. (here is the link to the original or you can check the resources below. http://hitrecord.org/records/141257)
But I've always wondered what it would be like if we took it to the next step because I feel this piece is really conducive to our mass collaborative creative process.
So here's what to do:
Vocal Artists, Actors, Poets - record yourself reading the text of the original video. You can read it however you like, but it may be that the more similar to the original the better.
Audio Mixers - Mix together a large creative combination using these different recordings of everyone reading the text.
Video Editors - Let's start providing and editing visuals into a big montage that corresponds to the text. Remember, sometimes it's not the most literal connection that is best, but maybe something less obvious that still provokes the same sentiment as the text.
Alright, I want to screen this at Sundance 2012, so let'sget to work!
Thanks again

Contribute to the Collaboration here! http://hitrecord.org/records/590974 This week's Regularity - Calling all Illustrators, all Animators - I wanna see your "Man With A Turnip For A Head"... Let's make an animated short film out of Metaphorest's darkly delightful short text and Gary Oldman's glorious live performance of it. First step is to design the main character.
ILLUSTRATORS: let's see your version of this guy. He should be a prim and proper, buttoned up, completely normal looking man EXCEPT for his turnip head. Draw him several ways. Do some close shots and side shots. Front and profile. Maybe pick a few moments from the story and draw those.
If you haven't read or heard the story yet, follow this link -- http://www.hitrecord.org/records/590975
Once we've got the main character, we can start creating the other elements that will make up the settings and scenes, animate them, scoring the piece, editing it together, etc...
I wanna screen this at our upcoming Sundance show, so we're on a bit of a tight deadline, but between the lot of us, I think we'll be good.
Okay, Once again thanks to the community for the wonderful RE-RECommendations, there sure is a bunch of great work going on and you you all know how to REC them.
Thanks Again,
J
