Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen. Please welcome Neil Dimmock from Hitch Masters Percherons. He is demonstrating the amazing abilities of his six horse hitch. This hitch won the six horse hitch driving competition at the Vermilion Fair Draft Horse Show 4 years in a row. His competitor's used the top six show horses of three other competitors.

In the lead, we have Jan and Wyatt. On the swing we have Waldo and Jim. On the wheel are Tom and Ben. They range in age from 4 to 14 years old. And the largest are 18 hands and weigh 2300 lbs. Wyatt has been the leader in every big hitch that Neil has driven in the last 10 years. The Percheron breed holds the world record for the largest living horse. The reason they are a favorite is because of their style, grace and heart. Neil is not prejudice, but there are two kinds of horses -- Percherons and something else, and there are two colors Black and something else.

In the driving demonstration, Neil will try and show a sample of every day driving of a six horse hitch hauling freight at the turn of the century in every major city. First of all they need to have speed, but absolute control. The driver should be able to spin them around a barrel- also known as spinning the top- in either direction. And if you are lucky Neil will try to put the leader's noses on the end gate of the wagon. Backing to a dock is the only way you could get loaded and sometimes you had to back down an alley then to the dock. Fanning left or right was to remove the hitch from blocking the street. The wagon is not supposed to move during this maneuver. They should trot in line, at a sharp pace all in the bit with tight tugs. Some of the things that we do now are just pure showmanship. The wagon is a turn of the century Gibson's City Freight wagon. The style which is used for most show hitches today. It has been rebuilt by Neil and his dad.

Neil has been driving and training horses for close to 30 years. Some of his most noteworthy accomplishments are driving the 30 horse hitch in Irricana Alberta in 1999, receiving the certificate from the Canadian Percheron Association for driving the two World Record 46 horse hitch of Percherons ever in May 2003. He was high skinner and head teamster for the first ever international Historical Construction Equipment Association's show in Wetaskiwin at the Reynolds Museum in August 2005, where Neil drove 16 horses on a restored elevator grader, plus overseeing 10 other teams and teamsters using dump wagons, Fresno's, scrapers, wheeled scrapers and road graders.

Neil currently runs a school for teamsters. Each session is 5 days long and is for everyone, the beginner driver to the person who wants to learn to drive big hitches and hone his skills. The sessions run once a month and are located at Neil's farm near Edmonton Alberta. His students include children as young as 7 and foreign students from countries such as England and Germany.
