About this user

I'm Deborah Henson-Conant. I'm an electric harpist, singer, songwriter, composer, writer, doodler and performer. Music, for me, is a way to tell a story. I love jazz, Blues, Flamenco and music-theater -- especially when they're all mixed together. My experience of life/music is that if you can build a strong structure or idea, it will give you freedom of expression. That's why I use basic concepts of jazz improvisation in nearly everything I do. I signed with a major Jazz label in the 80's, then after that, established my own performance genre that mixes Latin Jazz, Celtic, Blues, Flamenco, Folk-Pop and Spoken Word. I'm told that people are inspired by my shows. That's one of my favorite things to hear because I believe that the best performances liberate and empower the audience. I hear that people never look at the harp the same way again after they see me play. That's great because I don't see 'harp' the way most people do -- and I've worked with the CAMAC harp company for over 10 years to develop a completely new, carbon fibre electric harp that straps on and plays like an electric guitar. I perform concerts and one-woman shows. I usually perform solo in theaters, festivals and concert halls or as a soloist with orchestras as in my video/audio project "Invention & Alchemy" (which received a Grammy Nomination and aired on PBS stations throughout the US - oh yeah!).
