@ThePerfectRed This scene is set in the early phase of the war in August/Sept 1914 when all of the armies still used cavalry extensively (with heavy losses). Trench warfare did not really begin until October 1914 after the German advance on Paris was halted at the Marne and First Ypres.

If you are English it has become harder, you now have to have half a million in the bank and have 3 PHDs before they let you in.
