Well done, Antonia. You really put the song across beautifully and bring out the meaning of each phrase. A lovely, natural singing voice.

Ryan singing a classical song called The Owls by Peter Jenkyns

Well done, Ryan. You obviously like this song. Why not try it at a slightly faster speed and concentrate on singing through the phrases without breathing in the middle? Go for a real legato on "rose in the air (BREATHE) and flew to where his mate....etc". Have a go.

In case you didn't get that: Hilde has been learning the bassoon for two years and plays in a youth orchestra. The titles of the four movements are: "A peaceful piece", "A Little Waltz", "L'apres-midi d'un dinosaur" and "Polka". Oh, and Gordon Jacob was an English composer, not Dutch. I've neve...

This song is pitched too low for your voice. If you sang it about a 4th higher you could sing it properly and the words would be clearer too.

This clip gives no idea of the variety and lively character of the market at Guerlesquin. There is singing, Breton dancing, horses being shod and loads of stalls including, of course, crepes. You have to visit Guerlesquin on a Monday morning. It is NW of central Brittany, just north of Huelgoat.

Nice to hear it with vibrato and phrase shaping. Just heard it (live) at the Proms as an encore after Mahler 9 conducted by Sir Roger Norrington, the anti-vibrato man! He made Elgar and Mahler sound the same: cold and clinical, bulging notes instead of melodic lines. This is nice. I like the ...

I suppose there are rondo elements, i.e. it is something like A B A C A B C A. But I hear it as sonata form because of the way B returns in the tonic, prepared by the necessary tonal changes. Abridged sonata form is sonata form without a development section, so I was hearing A B A C as the expo...

Agreed with all those who find it a fast blur. For example: if hadn't known the music I would never have known that the main tune starts with two repeated notes. It just loses its rhythmic bite.

Another interesting question is bar 29 which only has three beats, although there is no indication of a changed time signature. Did Nevin really mean it? The orchestral version by the New London Orchestra inserts a beat at the end of the bar. But the historical version (also here on YouTube), ...

A remarkably musical child. You can tell he knows the music inside out. He is much better than some "professional" conductors because he reacts naturally to the music rather than trying to impose things on the orchestra.

G major? What an unusual key structure between the four movements. This is quite a light scherzo, not a frantic Beethovenian one. Trio has hemiola relationship to scherzo (count three in a bar, but at half the speed).

I was very interested to hear this work. If I had not known what it was I would have put it a good deal earlier than 1861 when it was first performed. Bruckner, at this stage, had not written anything for orchestra, yet he was widely known as a brilliant organ improvisor. This seems to me a we...
