From a view of different angle, Kanba actually is quite a tragic character since the two main heroines in the show are all fell in love with Shouma; no wonder Kanba said he wanted to shoot Shouma out of jealousy.

Now this is interesting, since in the book the author gave strong hints that Paul decided to conduct a suicide charge alone and allowed enemy to kill him - since Paul clearly believed the war had thrown him into such depression that he could not live after the war ended.
