About Me:
Of course, orbs of steel aren't the only things Vee tosses these days. Catch the New Jersey native (nee Vanessa Asbury) with a microphone in her hand and you best watch your head because all sorts of verbs and witty metaphors are going to be hurled about. "When I was discouraged by my family or friends or whatever, I would find myself writing," explains the Salt 'n Pepa and Missy Elliott fan of her rhyming origins. "It was kind of addicting. I would write in my notebooks. I would write in school, not listening in class. I was around 16 or 17."
But Vee sees you looking skeptically at her resume. 18-years-old. Female. Rapper. Yeah, so she's probably in that same I-love-the-mall-and-boys sorority with every other 106 & Park-watching teen, right? "No," insists the young lady who aspires to help other girls with self-confidence and weight issues as much as she aspires to be a guest host on TRL. "My style of music is just me. I'm not the one to rap about drugs or sexual body parts or anything like that because I feel I don't have to sell myself out to sell records. Okay, I'm a female but I'm not going to go, 'Sex this, sex that'."
You could credit a number of factors to Vee approaching the recording booth differently than many estrogen-filled emcees. You wouldn't be wrong by starting with her loving family. The confident Vee quickly names her hard-working mom and caring sister as positive influences in her life. She also passes props to her pops, comedian Willie Asbury, for her can't-stop, won't-stop approach to making it. "There were always jokes and laughter everywhere," Vee recalls. "He made us laugh all of the time. He would always do different impressions of famous people. It would always be laughs and no negativity really."
Oh to be an adolescent and see your dad doing Mike Tyson impressions again. Now that high school graduation has come, Vee has to manage the pressures of getting her already buzzed-about name even more places and getting her yet-untitled debut ready for its Fall '08 release on Razor & Tie Entertainment. Discovered at a local talent contest in New Jersey by A&R legend, Michael Caplan, Vee was signed to Razor & Tie. Caplan discovered such artists as Matisyahu, Ginuwine, Living Colour, Los Lonely Boys, to name a few.
And how could we possibly forget about the naysayers who said that she'd never get the first single, the ridiculously-catchy "I Don't Need A Hook," any airplay? "I wanna big up my haters," Vee quips. "They keep me going basically. They give me energy. You gotta love your haters 'cuz if they're not doing their job by telling people to look at you, you wouldn't be as famous as you are. If they didn't hate then I wasn't doing something right."
Told you she could throw it with the best of them...
