Melty Blood
Its beginnings were notoriously flawed, but no doubt promising. What started as one-half doujin game based on another doujin game, one-half Guilty Gear parody, has seen commercial success and even recognition in the competitive fighting game scene. The sprites may seem a bit dated compared to other fighters of this generation, but the animation is likened to that of 3rd Strike's. Easy to learn, difficult to master.
Guilty Gear
While its complex mechanics have earned it the title of the most hardcore 2D fighter on the market, it's also its blend of unique graphics, character designs, and hard rock influences that've set it apart from all of the Street Fighters and King of Fighters that otherwise reign supreme in the 2D fighting game scene.
Certainly notorious for its sketchy balance issues, but certainly ambitious.
