First off, let me apologize for the high pitched feedback that is coming through in parts...didn't really notice it while playing, I think because of the hat. Anyway, I don't find it too distracting and it was a good take, so up it goes and I can move on :). Probably going to work on "The Grudge" next.
Something occurred to me while I was working on this song. I've heard before in one article or another, that Adam wasn't happy with his sound in a few songs on the Undertow album...and that was one of the reasons they used a new producer for Aenima. Well, if you listen to how Adam plays this song live, it "sounds" quite a bit different. Perhaps this is one instance where the way he plays it didn't come across on the album, and so he wasn't happy with it? I've tried to incorporate some of those sounds into this cover...particularly the "strumming near the neck" sections starting around 1:10.
You may also find the variation of the riff at 4:15 interesting...you'll recognize it as the same technique Adam used on Jambi. It's my opinion that he's used this technique here and there on many songs going back as far as Undertow. Not sure about Opiate, as I've not learned any of those songs...yet. It was only with Jambi, when Adam made a whole song around this riff, that it got more attention. Again, all of this is just my opinion based on my experience, my eyes, and my ears...your mileage may vary :).
At the end of the song, 4:55, I've included an alternate version of a couple of the riffs. The difference is mainly in the strumming. I swear in all the videos I've watched/listened to, I could hear Adam playing it this way here and there. Didn't want to do it this way for the cover as he doesn't, if he does at all, play it this way often. I just thought it was interesting, so I included it.
Not that anyone gives a rats a** what I've been up too personally, but over the last couple of months since my last video...I've been exercising regularly! I Quit smoking in October and now I'm jogging several times a week. So, I should progressively get thinner...we'll see.
Take care, and I look forward to "talking" to you in the comments section...

Tool Sober guitar cover.
Sorry about all the funny faces. Apparently your brain tells your mouth to move when you're trying to make sounds...even if you are trying to make them with your hands :). Also, I don't intentionally wear my Tool shirt when I'm doing a cover...I've only got 3 or 4 t-shirts that I like; so, chances are great that I'll be wearing the same shirt in many videos....this one happened to make it two in a row, lol.
Wanted to get another take on this song as my first one was one of the first covers/videos I'd made....and it's not very good. I've been at this for a while now, and my playing and tone have improved, IMO, so I wanted to re-do it. As I go along and complete the last of the Tool covers that I want to do, I may revisit more of my older ones and re-do them also....particularly if they are incorrect or would benefit from better tone.
The biggest change in my routine since I did the first Sober cover is basically the amount of research that I do. I think I was going mainly off tabs for the first one. Lately, in order to prepare for my next cover, I watch every live video I can in order to see exactly what Adam is doing when he plays the songs. Kind of difficult as there isn't a whole lot of footage of Adam....it's mostly Maynard in the videos. And, of course, I practice the song for longer before I record it...which makes a big difference :).
This song is considered by most to be one of the easiest Tool songs to play. I'd have to say that I thought so too when I got started on this. Again, there is more than meets the ear with this song, as with most of Adam's playing. The beginning riff at 1:20 is one of the hardest that I have had to play and required lots and lots of practice. I'm not a big "strummer", so the strumming parts were difficult for me as well. The song also has many subtle parts...which for me can make it harder to pull off than a song that just plays aggressively.
This is just my experience....everyone's different; but I didn't find this song easy at all...in fact I don't consider any Tool song easy. If they were, people would be able to play them note for note with every nuance and every sound...feedback included. But they don't, so it must be hard. Is there any other way to look at it?
Another interesting tid-bit about this song is the "bend" right after the breakdown. Always thought it was a bend....sounds like a bend, but it's not. It's a pick scrape! Watch some of the earlier footage of this song performed live if you don't believe me. It sounds like a bend because of the tone of Adam's guitar...very heavy midrange, etc. Pretty cool, and I was blown away....could never get the bend to sound right. Makes sense now, as I was doing it wrong, lol.
Anyway, take care and thanks for watching! Joe
