Bed sores are an epidemic in hospitals and nursing homes in this country and are the cause of needless suffering and death in people that should be recovering from their strokes.  Bed sores are a major source of infection and are very costly to the hospitals and nursing homes to treat. Unfortunately, numerous hospitals put aside money in special accounts in the even they are sued for the occurence of bed sores in any of their patients. This is a disgrace. This money can be better spent on hiring staff, retraining staff, and buying or fixing needed equiptment. The occurence of bed sores in this nation's health faciilities cost the HMO's approximately $55 billion dollars in 2008. The American Stroke Foundation must get involved in this area of stroke rehab.

The American Stroke Foundation sent out a message saying that they are now going to be using therapy dogs in stroke rehab. I let them know that I thought this was an excellent idea, however; I also let them know that they need to be more involved in the prevention of bed sores in patients trying to recover from their strokes.
