I always wondered, and I still wonder, what happened to the bass in this tune. This is the same recording as the ”Encore!” album, the live album from their 1966 Japan tour, released in early 1967. The bass sounded great on all the other tracks of that album, like La Bamba, 007-11, Yozora No Hoshi...

@glmike523 Just like Mel Taylor then. Listen to The Ventures live CD's from the 1990's, especially Manchurian Beat. He does the intro of Hawaii Five-O and Manchurian Beat way faster than the rest of the songs… Maybe this drummer copies Mel in that aspect?

I wonder why they speeded the tape up like this (or maybe the tape speed was too low during recording, same result anyway). If you lower the speed a few % you can actually recognise their voices, and the key becomes the same as their live recordings of the song.

@Keesfarida It's actually a Johnny Smith tune, which Chet Atkins covered and later Ventures and a lot of other band, such as Shadows in the 1970's (very close to the version played here).

@mlkemper Interesting since he use a volume pedal in this tune (or maybe he use the volume knobs of his guitar, the effect is the same, but it's a bit easier to achieve with a volume pedal).

Maybe there are Wah-Wah pedals that also can be used as a volume pedal? I don't use any pedals these days,...

@Gyphia As far as I know, Chet Atkins did those triplets before Nokie. Chet was one of the guitarists that was a great inspiration source for Nokie back in those days, as far as I understand from different interviews with Nokie available here on YouTube. Les Paul was another one, but I'm not sure...
