No Age are for the people. When it comes to playing free intimate performances for their fans, the shows come a plenty and usually they're in the most interesting of places (e.g., a vegan grocery store, the Los Angeles River). Prior to the release of their excellent debut record Nouns, the duo of Randy Randall (guitar) and Dean Spunt (drums), showcased a handful of new songs as well as ripped out a few choice selections from their prior compilation Weirdo Rippers, at the most appropriate of places: a public library. In this case the Los Angeles Central Library in Downtown L.A. After their raucous performance, Ground Control chatted with the two (Randall battling a throat infection was still able to speak...barely). Whether they're discussing The Smell (the all-ages venue the group calls home), their new record or their sudden rise from DIY kings to Sub Pop signees, the two let it all out. The passion is there. We proudly present Lunarcast number nine.

Matt Costa has played all over the world to huge crowds. He's been mobbed in airports and had fans who don't speak English sing along word for word. Yet to launch his new record Unfamiliar Faces, Costa headed back home to Southern California to rest, relax and play a few in-stores—you know, a laid-back intimate setting for his hometown fans. Ground Control caught up with him at Encinitas' famed Lou's Records, where a line of kids who bought his album just a few days before were lined up down the block, waiting to hear him sing.
Just prior to the show, Costa took some time to talk about the new record, new instruments and the reason why his album (originally scheduled for release in October '07) hit the streets in the wintertime. Then he ducked away to play a short acoustic set in the back office at Lou's before the big, full band set. Ground Control was lucky enough to tag along, and with that, we proudly present Lunarcast number eight.

PART 3 - www.groundcontrolmag.com
For our seventh Lunarcast, we caught with up the latest addition to the Kemado family, Saviours. Hailing from Oakland, CA, their brand of metal is as precise as it is raw. There is this perfect balance of the gut-wrenching brutality, reminiscent of Kill 'Em All, Ginsu guitar work that would make the nimblest fingers black with envy, and a punk ethic that shoves convention aside and allows the band to write music their way.
We caught up with them in Los Angeles two times. Once at a last-minute show in Eagle Rock where the power failed more times than George Bush in college, and a second time at "Evil" Joe Barresi's studio, Bay 7, where they he was mixing Saviours' sophomore album, Into Abaddon, due out early 2008. The band—Scott Batiste (drums), Cyrus Comiskey (bass), Tyler Morris (guitar), Austin Barber (guitar/vocals)—discussed everything from signing to Kemado, their songwriting process, working with the "tone master" Joe Barresi and everything in between.

For our 6th Lunarcast, we had a chance to meet up with L.A.'s own disco-lovin' groovemeister Kennedy—yeah, the "Your Mama" guy. We first met up with him June 28 when he played the Warped Tour 2007 pre-party at the Glass House in Pomona, CA. Then the following week we headed up to a Hollywood studio where he was finalizing his latest single—it's not on his new album, Kennedy For President, due out on Cordless Recordings/Warner Brothers on August 21, so you're gonna have to wait for that one. Kennedy talked about his high school bands, working with U.K. super-producers Count De Money and how he couldn't afford proper choreography for his #1-single-to-be "Karate."
Kennedy For President is out August 21 on Cordless Recordings/Warner Brothers Records.

www.groundcontrolmag.com
Our fifth installment of Lunarcast features a Southern California band called Hell At Night. The band's original concept was as a duo, consisting of twin brothers Nart and Dan Chejoka (drums and guitar/vocals, respectively). However, earlier this year, a third member was added to the band, former Lidsville frontman Greg Johnson, who now provides the much-needed bass and sings lead and backup vocals. It was this lineup that entered the studio for a second round to finalize their debut EP Battle of the Spirit at The Distillery with producer extraordinaire Mike McHugh (Lightening Bolt, The Lamps). Mchugh, Johnson and the Chejokas put their heads together to crystallize a sound that ranges from Pavement and The Pixies to Danzig and ELO. It's rough and crisp with a hint of familiarity, but sounds as pure a freshly scorched $50.

www.groundcontrolmag.com
Our fourth installment of Lunarcast features the Los Angeles rock band Amateurs. This break-the-rules quartet began working together behind guitarist/vocalist Keith Waggoner and drummer Stephen Garver as they honed in on what would eventually become the blueprint for their ultimate sound. After moving down to L.A., they added violinist Shannon De Jong and guitarist/vocalist Anthony Puglisi to round out the band's set-in-stone lineup.
The band began writing their debut full-length Speak Easy throughout 2006, entering the studio in November of that same year to nail it down in the studio. Having already worked with Manny Nieto (Mars Volta, The Breeders) at the Rock Block in Eagle Rock, CA, when they recorded their EP, Hope For The Best, Expect The Worst, they felt comfortable enough with his talents to go back to take care of the full-length. Other collaborators include Dave Trumfio (Wilco, Grandaddy) and Scott Hirsch (The Court & Spark) who helped produce this flourishing record, which captures the sounds of modern soft-rockers like Midlake and Wilco, as well as reaching into the back catalogue to sprinkle in hints of The Byrds, Fleetwood Mac and Fairport Convention. The album is timeless and well-crafted and not exactly easy to define, but definitely belongs in your record collection.
