So to construct the third mode of C major, we start and end on E using all the notes of C major...this is called the phrygian mode and it has it's own unique interval pattern. The next modes follow the same pattern and by constructing a different scale for each note in the major scale, we construct 7 different chords using one major scale. These are the chords of a key. This is the pattern for chords in a key Maj, Min, Min, Maj, Maj, Min, Diminished (don't worry about this yet) and then back to the root. Similary, we can order the modes in this way Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, Locrian and Ionian and you'll find that the first scale is major, the second and third are minor, the 4th and 5th are major etc...the chords of any given key are constructed from the key tones (1st3rd5th) of its modes.

Hey I saw a comment asking how modes work...basically you need to know 1. The intervals of a major scale 2. key tones of a scale. The intervals of a major scale are: WWHWWWH (W=whole step H=Half step). Using any note you can build a major scale by applying that interval pattern. The key tones of a scale are the 1st 3rd 5th and 7th notes, using any given scale you can construct a chord by using these notes. CDEFGABC is the c major scale and CEGB are the notes of a C maj. 7th chord. The intervals of a chord have names, Root Maj. 3rd and Perfect 5th. All the intervals of the scale are named: root, maj 2nd, maj 3rd, perf. 4th, perf. 5th, maj. 6 maj. 7 and octave. As you can see there are basically two types of intervals, maj. and perfect. (this is important so keep it in mind.)
