Moisture content in the pot was probably the culprit. The heat from the thermite caused moisture trapped in the ceramic to boil and the escaping stream blew the pot to pieces. Baking the pot to remove the moisture beforehand should mitigate the risk of crucible failure. Metal casters do the sam...
