The pandeiro is a common hand drum found in Brazil. It is almost universally used to play a rhythm known as Samba, which has many styles dirived from it, including Bossa Nova. Most everyone in Brazil knows someone who can play the pandeiro.
The pandeiro consists of a round frame with a skin on one side, with usually 5-7 pairs of jingles, also known as zils or platinelas. The jingles of a pandeiro look like miniature high-hats, which provide a quick attack.
The pandeiro is a member of the tambourine family
which traces it's roots into prehistoric North Africa.
the pandeiro design came from older tambourine-like drums like the Arabic Riq, which like a tambourine, has a skin on one side but usually has doubled jingles.
The Arabic Riq probably came from the ancient Adufe, which is square, has skins on both sides, but no jingles.
In Brazil, The pandeiro came from Portugal, but The Samba rhythm came from Africa.
"Semba" is an old game from Angola where two dancers try to hold an object between their bellies while dancing.
Samba has a unique rhythm, much different than any western rhythm.
Instead of each beat having the same amount of time or being in a straight swing, Each of the four beats of Samba has differing amounts of time.
It's unknown exactly how this rhythm came to be. Maybe it was just how the pandeiro naturally balances in the hand, maybe it was the rhythm of the Samba dancer's legs.
A good thing about the pandeiro is that it is light, and can accompany almost any instrument

This bus can run completely off of vegetable oil. This recycled energy source can be found anywhere that a greasy restaurant can be found. This was filmed at Uncle Uncannys near Midway, Utah. It also uses diesel fuel when necessary.

A power pole breaks in half and then explodes when the power lines cross.
A fireman sprays water on the burning poles to put them out, but it takes a while.
About 8 hours later, a new pole is installed and power is restored.
