Mixed but mainly organ music
About Me:
One of my pet hates is MONO recordings, as far as I know, stereo sound has been around since WW2 so why people upload things on youtube in mono baffles me and why mobile phones and cameras with HD video still record in mono is ridiculous.
One of my greatest interests is Pipe organs.
I'm not religious though I like to think there is a greater force looking down on us so I try to behave myself and be a good person.
I like some traditional church music but I am quite selective. I also like other music, though there has to be a good tune or a catchy beat.
I'm not keen on the angry type of music I hear coming from some people's cars where the artist is trying to make some kind of political statement.
Although I am passionate about pipe organs, I am more interested in the sound and workings of the organ and I like nothing more than a uplifting hymn tune played well on a good pipe organ and if it is accompanied by a good choir and congregation, all the better.
Most electronic organs I have heard, Allen, Viscount etc sound blatantly electronic to me, they don't sing, the sound of one pipe is too much the same as the ones around it and there is often a rhythmic beat to the sound. Even some pipe organs can sound quite dead. The only electronic organs that impress me are Hauptwerk and Marshall & Ogletree, the later being extremely pricey and not within the reach of the average organist who wants their own practice instrument at home. In my opinion Hauptwerk is good value for money and if you have the time and patience, can be voiced to your own taste. The main drawback is that it runs on computers which could be a let down in a live situation. Also some of the sample sets till recently were not that accurate though still better than I have heard on most Allens or Viscounts.
I find it a great shame that for the general public, the organ is often associated with dull, dismal churches where a small group of people gather once a week to listen to a minister who seems to have little perception of what is happening in the outside world and I know this is not always the case.
Religeous evangelists who push religion in peoples faces really irritate me, people who come to my front door preaching about it always get politely turned away, I will not be brain washed as they have obviously been.
I was brought up in the Church of England and went to church every Sunday until I was about 14 when I rebelled as I just saw it as a pointless ritual and did not like getting up early on a Sunday morning.
As you get older your tastes and thoughts change and I now appreciate things that I would not have even noticed years ago.
In 1987 I started to play the organ for a small church near Watford just north west of London.
To help with my practice, in 1992 I built my own 3 manual organ using an empty console from another church. It had digitally sampled sound and a capture system for the stops but sadly I had to sell it when I moved in 1996 due to lack of space, I regret that now.
I left the church in Watford when I moved away but I occasionally played there when their organist was unavailable but for years after that I did not play at all.
In 2004 my uncle died and there was a memorial service which I found very moving and the singing and organ sounded great, this prompted me to carry on where I left off with my playing.
I stumbled across a computer program called Hauptwerk which seemed to do everything I wanted.
My computer was not very good at the time and could not cope if you used more than about 6 stops.
A few years ago I built myself a new computer which I now use with Hauptwerk.
Hauptwerk 4 has come on a lot since the version in 2004.
I hope to obtain a console to use Hauptwerk with but space and money is all rather lacking.
I spend considerable time looking on Youtube at other peoples' performances and have learnt a lot and I find it gives me an incentive to improve.
I see no point in uploading a performance loaded with heaps of wrong notes and wrong note values, a few is permissible, even top performers make mistakes after all.
At the moment there is no point in doing videos as there is nothing to see but when I get a proper Hauptwerk setup I shall invest in a video camera...

Not keen on much of the music around since about 2000, well to be honest there isn't much I would call "Music" its usually words put to a few notes just to try and class it as music.

I have reached 100 subscribers today which has made a nice early Christmas present.
I think to label yourself as an organist when the above are not realised is a case of delusions of grandeur.
Is it possible to request more hymns and modern worhip songs?
My favourite is: Carman - I Feel Jesus
To one day be able to listen to the best song ever made, on the best instrument ever made. Speechless.
If not you, I will live in the hope someone else does it. Amen.
Cheers,
Martin
