@joeypesci well, that's only partly true. You could easily build a arcade machine today that looks better than a PS3/Xbox 360 game. Because the hardrware is specificly designed with the arcade game in mind. On top of that, it can be more expensive (5000$ for a new arcade machine isn't uncommon). ...

@jeffgooloolie no, this is a 2.5D engine because the world isn't really 3D. In this case there is no Y axe (if X is sideways and Z is depth). Just to give you an example; it's not possible to create a bridge between two mountains and fly under it.
