Junkbox are a London (UK) based rock'n'roll band formed in 2002 by Darren Van-Asten (vox/guitar), John Devolle (guitar/harmonica) and Shoko Ariba (drums) after meeting at art school some years before. Originaly signed to New Orleans based indy label, Park the Van, their first LP was released 2 weeks before the city was devasted by Hurricane Katrina, The label lost everything in the floods and eventually re-located to Pennsylvania. The album was eventualy released in the UK and Europe on Re-Action Records in May 2006.
Their first ever gig took place in 'Armpit' a venue they helped build 2 days before with Gelitin as Part of the Liverpool Biennale 2002.
The music is is a strange mix of stripped down, blues, punk, raw R&B/garage rock. They do not have a bassist, instead Darren Van-Asten plays his 6 string guitar through a bass amplifier, to create a fuzzed-up bassy guitar sound. Guitarist John Devolle's use of alternative tunings/slide and old valve amplifiers gives the music a scuzzy blues-twang, while Shoko Ariba's pounding rythms keep everything together. Most of the songs are very short, averaging around the 2 minute mark.
