omg... 57 and this song still gets my feet moving. who on earth could sit still when this song comes on? Not moi.. lol

I don't think that Bob ever got the recognition that he should have. His music has lasted when so many others did not. TRUE genius.. Fell in love with his voice and music when young and still in love at 57.

What a beautiful rendition of one of Gord's best songs.. A perfect balladeer's voice for a perfect ballad. Well done.. and yup.. could almost fool me into thinking you Canadian lol..

I heard this first when I was ummm 21... I'm 57 now and this song is more relevant now in my life but it still makes me cry... my favourite of all Gord's ballads..

Gordie may not sing as he used to but his music will live forever no matter who sings it. In fact, the fact that others WANT to sing Lightfoot's music says it all. This is the only song of Gord's that makes me cry for all those I loved and lost long ago..

Jim Stafford was soooo underated. This "song" was embedded in my memory, HIS version and I have never forgotten it. I still love it!

Amazing how he could get the sound of seagulls on a deserted shore down perfectly. Always loved Roger's whistling and couldn't wait to hear it again. Tried so hard to whistle like him when I was younger! lol. What a blast from the past.

When I hear this, something very deep inside of me almost remembers something that I didn't even know I had forgotten... if that makes sense .. I don't know any other way to say how it makes me feel

So many of us lost relatives when they moved.. Still trying to find what happened to my maternal grandfather's youngest brother. Went to America and disappeared. A whole line lost...

Always wondered if these brothers were ever truly happy... still, this song always makes me smile...

@jezhowell lol. Rabid Scottish gits however I agree with you. I don't think that they got the credit they deserved either. Rabid or not.. politics aside, LOVED and still love their music.

I've heard so many do this and Rinat Shaham is my favourite I must say.. Rinat brought the actual "teenage" angst the part requires... understated. Love von Stade's voice but for me, she is just not believable in this part..

@marascar Fabiana is Argentine born and came to Canada in her teens. She is a wonderful mezzo soprano and also teachs music. A very accomplished woman. I recently heard her in a production of the Marriage of Figaro and the years since this particular song has only improved her voice like fine win...

@phazerracing Yes time passes quickly. When this song first came out in early 2000 I was 45. Now I'm only less than 3 years away from being 60. No idea how that happened LOL..

I have said it before, finally a singer who sings this song as the dark, bitter, angry and self pitying song it was written as. Bravo to Dame Judi Dench. She got it exactly right. Gives me chills..

I still love Solomon Burke's best but lord, this comes a close second. Love that Duffy has her own voice.

OMG... I was at that concert and I was 16 years old then. Listening to her, I knew that night I was never going to be able to sing rock n roll.

His bass is unmistakable. Truly one of the greatest true Basses of all time and America lost this wonderful bass due to the prejudices of the time. Never mind his politics people.Close your eyes and just listen to that resonating bass.

@sharon012490 I agree with you. Dylan, both his poetry and voice were unique and to be honest, back then we simply accepted Dylan without critquing his voice. Vedder does this great justice...

@PAhuntandgame I'm sorry dear but you are incorrect. Dylan did indeed write this. In fact, he wrote so many songs that were around then. People who are not from that time would be surprised. Dylan always wanted to tell a story through his music and he gives credit to Woody Guthry for that.

biohead honey, back then, women were very much second class citizens so if the words had been " you belong with me" instead of " to" me, it would have been much more romantic. Every woman I've spoken to regarding this song who was around in the 30's and 40's took issue with that particular line. ...

@omegapoint0 . According to her biography, she wanted to sing opera however the Great Depression put an end to any voice studies in that area and she began singing with her sisters. Back then, most singers had beautiful eloquence. It was a requirement. People wanted to hear the words.

@bretbryan sent this to my ex husband, he actually listened to it and rang me the other day. Said " I blamed everyone but myself and I was a idiot. Why didn't you tell me?" Made me laugh. Only took him 20 years! Thank goodness we stayed chums.
