Barry, books are great and all that, but we felt that DVD videos were the best way to go to let you HEAR symptoms and SEE the repairs! As far as amp building our Tube Amps 101 dvd will give a very good understanding of how tube amps work, which will make it easier for you to mod other amps. The whole 6 hour series ends with modifications. By the time your done with all the vids you will KNOW how to repair and work on tube amps!

just found your channel. i am waiting on a remedial tube amp repair book that everyone was recommending on HC. I want to build a guitar amp out of my old '60's Lowrey Organ and my old 60's record player I had as a kid. Do you have any suggestions for these types of projects?

koval529 - first we have to establish if the noises occur DURING the actions you take or if that is what happens AFTER. As in you switch to the Lead Channel and it buzzes.... is that during switching or does it buzz all the time in the Lead Channel? Send your replies to glp@conwaycorp.net...... or post on my NING website...

Great job glprecycledsound on the videos!! I have a few questions about my Budda Superdrive 18 Amp.
When I switch the standby from "Rest" to "go" I hear crackling noises. I tapped on the tubes for microphonics and found one power tube that needed replaced however after replacing its still crackles when standby is turned off. Additional when I switch to the Lead channnel is buzzes quite loud . Any thoughts on what these problems can be? Respond would be greatly appreciated

Hey 3 LarryHunter, I also have a Gibson Les Paul GA-40 Amplifer that I had completely restored. Its a 1962 Crestline/Mariner since they have some similarities to both amps. If you can find some information on the Web about Gibson amps, you will find out that they were not very consistant on the design and parts.
Anyway, It sounds great either clean and/or distorted when I crank the volume past 6. Reminds me on a Bassman type sound. Good luck if you restore the amp. It is self rewarding in the end.

i have old les paul ga-40 amp any idea on where to start?

Greg, that grommet that mounts the power cable on those old fender amps is called a "heyco strain relief", and heyco makes a special tool to take it in and out. That tool is very worth it's purchase price.

Moucon, you should be good to go with the XLR Direct Out alone. To be honest, I haven't used this feature as yet, but in inspecting the Output board, the XLR is wired direct in with the output jacks and resistors are in place in what appears to be the load you'd expect. Great question and thanks!

Question - can it take being run with no speakers plugged in - just the XLR out to a board ? Or should you use a resistor or something plugged in to mimic the speaker load ?
