About The Global Sisterhood
The Global Sisterhood is a progressive not-for-profit organization with several ambitious goals. The umbrella goal, underneath which all of our strivings come from, is to change the culture that allows sexual abuse to continue. Girls in America, and all over the world, are raised to be passive, agreeable, and docile. They are raised to put others need in front of their own; to be friendly and "sweet" even in the face of possible danger; to think that their voice, thoughts and opinions do not matter as much as their male counterparts; to blame themselves even when they are the victim. The Global Sisterhood strives to change that. Through advocacy, awareness and empowerment, The Global Sisterhood tries to engender self-esteem, assertiveness and a commitment to education in all of the girls in our program. And when a girl is confident, educated, loved and supported, she is less likely to be sexually assaulted and more likely to heal if she does become a sexual violence survivor. And when girls are free of abuse, they are able to do what we know they are capable of: CHANGE THE WORLD!

My name is Dr. Colleen Duffy Cira. Ever since I began graduate school, I have been intrigued by trauma work. Due to several exceptionally difficult situations that I encountered in my own life the death of my best friend at a young age and my own battle with cancer I have been drawn to working with people who have experienced various traumas. Already having a deep personal understanding of how tremendous stressors affect ones psyche, I began my professional journey of learning how to help this population at Argosy University of Chicago in 2003.Currently, I am a staff therapist for a large private practice, The Gersten Center for Behavioral Health. I work with a variety of patients who have a menagerie of presenting problems, but my area of interest continues to be trauma work, specifically sexual abuse and assault. I have worked with dozens of men and women, girls and boys, over the last seven years all of whom are survivors of incest, sexual abuse and/or sexual assault. The resilience of this population never ceases to amaze me and it is truly the most fulfilling work I can imagine doing. However, I found myself wanting to help more people than just the patients that can afford to see me. I also wanted to do something to change the culture that allows this to happen to 1 out of 4 girls and 1 out of 6 boys. Thus, The Global Sisterhood: Girls Empowering Girls Around the World was born.
