VCRs were expensive even in the 1980s. For example, when my parents bought their first VCR around 1984 or 1985, they paid close to $500 for it and it was a floor model that originally cost close to $900.

I read on a discussion board that Columbia possibly released 78s in the US as late July of 1958, but the latest US Columbia 78 i've seen is "Come To Me" by Johnny Mathis, released around December of 1957.

I know what you mean. My parents did not get a VCR until 1984 or 1985, almost 10 years after they were first introduced and mostly used it to copy movies off cable that are now out on dvd.
