About this user
Glenn Stegall has captivated the local establishment by running to be the next mayor of Athens-Clarke County. Glenn says, I dont believe in waiting until its convenient to serve my community. If we wait for the perfect time to help people, the problems they face may not exist anymore. Our ability to help may not be the same in the future. So I say why wait? Why not step up to the plate now?Glenn attributes his passion and perseverance to his past, which he describes as living one childhood in two worlds. Glenn was born in the small community of Hazlehurst, GA to Subrenna and Glenn, Sr. When he was two years old, his father became incarcerated and his mother became a single parent. For several years he and his sister watched their mother work several jobs at a time to provide for her family. While they lived in public housing for some time, Glenns mother always worked hard to escape poverty. When Glenn began to struggle in school, his mother thought he deserved a better life.
At the age of nine, she sent Glenn to live with his aunt and uncle in a nearby town. They were both public school teachers and his uncle was a local pastor. In this environment Glenn developed a deep appreciation for education and the opportunities it provides. You can imagine my culture shock as I moved from the projects to a predominantly white middle class neighborhood. Everything was different. The first thing I noticed was my new friends had bigger dreams than I could ever imagine. My aunt and uncle raised their expectations for me and I soon began to dream big. -Glenn Stegall
Glenn soon reached his full potential and excelled in school. He developed a burning desire for public service, and dreamed of one day changing peoples lives forever. After graduating high school with honors, Glenn went on to attend the University of Georgia where hes graduating in less than four years. Glenn believes he would have never made it to the University of Georgia without the help of his aunt and uncle.
In 2008, Glenn put his dreams into action as he worked to help elect the next president of the United States. Glenn served as volunteer coordinator in Athens and helped register over 6000 new voters. His passion for public service continued to grow as he became more involved in the community. I was touched by our high poverty rate in Athens and subpar graduation rates. I saw children that reminded me of my childhood, and from that point on I knew I had to step up and fight for them. Athens-Clarke County has so much potential and I feel we need new leadership to move this community forward. -Glenn Stegall
Inspired by a unique life experience that gave Glenn a chance to understand the problem all people face, he decided to run for mayor of Athens. Glenn believes his profound understanding of the problems Athens-Clarke County faces will help him lead the city forward. He believes every child should have a fun, safe, and educational place to go after school. He believes we can significantly reduce poverty by finding innovative and practical ways to create jobs and help our local businesses grow. There is nothing holding us back except our own expectations. My story is proof that poverty can be overcome and every child has the ability to achieve if we give them the opportunity and resources. I will work hard as your next mayor to ensure your family succeeds. The future of Athens depends of you. I hope you will choose me to help move Athens-Clarke County forward. -Glenn Stegall
For Glenn, the time is now. In truth, there is no such thing as an opportune moment. Rather, Glenn believes the most meaningful achievements are harnessed in the commitment to challenge the odds.
