Does YouTube make any money?

It is hard to say, but probably not. While the video-sharing website is so popular that it is claimed to be the second-biggest search engine in the world, there is still precious little information on whether the money is rolling in. But there is plenty to suggest it is rolling out of the door.

Its parent company, Google, has to divulge certain financial details thanks to its publicly traded status, but it remains highly secretive about the numbers produced by its individual business units.

That is where Spencer Wang, an analyst with Credit Suisse, steps in. He estimates the site is due to lose $470 million ($661 million) this year - a huge amount for a site Google bought for $US1.65 billion just 2½years ago. The problem? An inability to sell ads on 97 per cent of its pages that could

carry ads, coupled with a huge number of users watching a vast amount of video, which is expensive to serve.

The problem is that user-generated content is not very appealing to advertisers. There are some high-profile problems over allegations of copyright infringement and royalty payments, too.

How to fix things? Perhaps video sites will look towards broad sponsorships, sweetheart deals and product placement - or try to persuade people to advertise their wares against that video of a dancing monkey with a wonky eye.
