Gillian began studying percussion at the age of twelve, moving to St Mary's Music School in Edinburgh to concentrate her high school education towards music at the age of 16. It was at St Marys where she discovered her love of marimba and made use of her opportunity to study many different aspects of music including classical, jazz and contemporary styles.Gillian has pursued her musical career decisively, attending many exclusive
courses including the Juilliard Summer Percussion Seminar in New York City, as well as playing with the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland and the Edinburgh Youth Orchestra. Past performances include a solo recital to the G8 Wives during the G8 summit of 2005 in Glamis Castle and a performance for Prince Charles at
the 20th Anniversary Conference for the Princes Scottish Youth Business Trust in 2009.
In 2005, Gillian was awarded an £80,000 grant from Donald Dewar Arts Awards to study percussion at University of Miami. However, in Gillians 3rd year of study, she was in a serious road traffic accident which resulted in her left leg being paralysed below the knee. Gillian was forced to return to her native Scotland to learn to walk and has remained in the UK to develop her career as a marimba soloist and composer. She now performs, composes and delivers marimba masterclasses in and around the UK, Ireland and Europe and is now gaining a reputation as one of the UKs leading marimba players.
One of Gillians specialities is the six mallet technique. Over the last year, she has been looking at the different techniques currently used, and is working on developing them in order to make the mallets more independent and therefore more accessible to tuned percussionists. In 2009 Gillian was selected as an official Encore Mallets Endorser.
Gillian is an avid composer, concentrating on marimba and percussion and her works are published by Southern Percussion and sold worldwide.
Gillian is also in demand as a speaker at events. Past engagements have included Young Enterprise Scotland, Princes Scottish Youth Business Trust, Volunteer Action Orkney, and Angus Entrepreneurial Teachers.
Gillian will be walking across Scotland in August 2010 for Callum and Gillian's Great Big Walk where they will be world premiering new works for marimba and guitar to raise money for Capability Scotland. www.callumandgilliansgreatbigwalk.co.uk
