The "jealous" god wasn't jealous in the way we understand jealousy - more like jealous in wanting to free people from the enslavement of Egypt. Liike this: "Those people are not yours, they're mine! Let them go/free" Get it, got it? Okay.
I totally understand your perception of the whole religion thing, but then there's the bible and what it says, not what "they" say it says. Thought you'd be interested to at least know.

The oldest surviving fragment of the new testament clearly says 616 and is based on the Latin form Nero Caesar as translated into Hebrew (nrw qsr) where 666 is based on the greek translation or Neron Caesar (nrwn qsr).
So all the conspiracy theories about the mark of the beast pretty much just end up being stories about Nero (also known as 'The Beast') and his reign of terror...
QFT thorkyll, While Jesus was a step up in the "less psychotic" sense, the doctrine of eternal damnation and torture in hell that came from the Jesus movement is just plain sick.
Call the God of the Hebrew Bible what you like, but at least He never taught any nonsense about eternal damnation and hellfire like Jesus, meek and mild, in the New Testament.
