The instruments on a squashfly are permanently illuminated. It's quite easy in a built up area to forget to turn them on.

So you know the road is narrow, you know its dark, you know that there is an oncoming large vehicle, you know you are on a bicycle that is difficult to see and you know that the edges of the road are not very good to ride on. Yet this still came as a surprise to you? Really?
