we talk about gm henry espera way to train his student, and also talk about RRK.
BIOGRAPHY:
Way before he got into Kali Ilustrisimo, Mang Henry was already well-versed with blades, but used as tools for work. He used the itak and the palakol (bolo and ax) to cut down trees and grass. He said he used to carry around a "karit" or a scythe - working as a Manggiti/Manananggot (Mang Henry talks in deep Tagalog-I haven't heard anyone use these words before). He used to climb trees to get coconuts to ferment and turn into local wine (tuba). He said he lived in a place so poor everyone was doing menial tasks. He claims his striking power was developed by doing hard labor. He learned to use the pana or the bow and arrow to fish in shallow water when he was a kid(He said that was how he played as a child).
He also became a boatman for a time, he said that's how he got his arm strength- from rowing (Those who have trained with Mang Henry know he has one heck of a grip). He used to tend to a farm using local farming tools like araro (plow) and asarol (don't even know what that is). When he came to Manila, he worked in a gravel and sand company, shoveling dirt. Afterwhich he became a jeepney (local means of communal transportation based on WWII US military jeeps) driver. His route always passed by Luneta, the national park frequented by the great arnisadors of the Philippines, like Tatang Antonio Ilustrisimo. And that was it. He would bring extra clothes and put it under the driver seat of the jeepney, then spend the night in the passenger seat, in Luneta park -he remembers anxiously waiting to train with Tatang in the mornings.
He said when he was younger, he used to get into fistfights, usually with other jeepney drivers. He remembers one time he had to defend himself against 5 assailants. At first he tried the fancy moves he "copied" from the Kung Fu practitioners in luneta. Every fancy move he did was met by a punch from behind. He was able to hold his own - he said he was able to knock some of them down but by using simple boxing moves. At that point he laughed and said to me, It would've been so nice if I could say I was able to knock them all out cold, but I wasn't able to. I just punched some of the guys, scared some of them, then both sides backed off. He became a proponent of simple and practical Filipino boxing moves since. Mang Henry is ever so humble - never claiming to be the best in anything. And he is the first to admit his weaknesses. I guess that's how one becomes great. Mabuhay kayo, Mang Henry!
