Weatherby patronymic is of ancient English origin, calling it after Wetherby, a well known and picturesque market town in the county of Yorkshire. It was called Wedderby by the Saxons. The first part of the surname, wether (sheep) are on the coat of arms.
"Blessed are the Merciful, for they shall Obtain Mercy" tombstone inscription for Captain David Weatherby (1747-1812), of the 3rd Batt. Gloucester County, NJ Militia during the Revolutionary War. Son of Benjamin Weatherby (died 1766), five of David's brothers fought in the War. His eldest brother, Whitehead Weatherby, is buried at St. Davids Radnor, near the final resting place of Anthony Wayne. Martha Weatherby, daughter of David and Mary Cavalier Weatherby, married Daniel Carroll in 1791.
The surname Carroll has a very old history, and when translated from the Irish, Cearbhaill (pronounced just like Carroll) means slaughter, or preferably, warlike champion. The name Carroll is distinctly Irish. There are no other forms of it found anywhere.
In studying the Carroll history, one finds many connections to the royal houses of Europe. For example, O'Carrolls married into the families of Robert the Bruce, King Duncan who was killed by Macbeth, Alfred the Great, the first king of England, and many barons, and nobles of England.
Many distinguished Carrolls are among the founding fathers of America.
