"A boy died after a water rescue on the Missouri River near Huntsdale.
Fifteen-year-old Corey Morris of Columbia died Saturday evening after jumping into the Missouri River to save an eight-year-old. Officials said the two were on a Missouri River sandbar when the incident happened. Officials didn't reveal the relationship between Morris and the younger boy, but the eight-year-old is safe.
Officials say Morris spent more than four minutes under water before a boat pulled him out near the Katfish Katys campground.
One woman camping at Katfish Katys said she and her husband had just settled into their spot when the event unfolded.
"It was very quiet in here, and all of a sudden we heard ambulances and police cars," camper Josie McAferty said. "We just saw one police car after the other come up, and pretty soon here come an ambulance and more police cars, and then here come the fire rescue with the boat."
Boone County Fire Protection District Interim Chief Scott Olsen said emergency crews made a mid-river transfer.
"Fire district units arrived on scene, put a boat in the water and rendezvoused with a boat that was carrying the victim back to the Huntsdale boat ramp."
From there, crews put Morris on a stretcher and loaded him onto the Life Flight helicopter, which flew to University Hospital.
Olsen said Morris was in critical condition at the time.
The Boone County Sheriff's Department took Morris' mother to University Hospital to be with her son.
Officials at the hospital pronounced him dead in the emergency room at 6:20 p.m.
"People usually take appropriate precautions in and around the river. It's a very rare event for us to have somebody drown in the Missouri River," Olsen said.
The accident happened approximately two miles down-river from the campground.
The Boone Country Fire Protection District responded to the call at approximately 4:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon, and the helicopter took Morris to the hospital at approximately 5:20 p.m. where he died." R.I.P Corey :( ily
