I love Patti LuPone, but she was not right for this part. Way too "modern" - too anachronistic for Mrs. Lovett. And don't get me started on HB-C in the movie - she was in way, way, way over her head. This is not a role for a movie starlet.

Definitive. My only complaint is that by the time they filmed this classic performance, there was a bit of "being on auto pilot" about the whole thing. Still, Angela Lansbury is revelatory.

This is quite amazing! Kudos to all! Having seen the original production twice, and susequent productions on both coasts- this is amazingly good. Ignore the haters- singing Sondheim's score is like singing Menotti - impossibly challenging for students of any age.

Ah the memory slips - he sounds good though.

79-80 was a late peak - saw him in 79 in San Francisco at Masonic Temple, first time he had been to SF in decades - seemed to be having the time of his life, and he was in fine, fine voice. A thrilling concert.
